What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is common and usually harmless. It is a condition in which patches of skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an increase of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin colour, forms deposits in the skin.

What causes hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation can happen through many various reasons such as injury or trauma (including from acne and eczema), sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation or damage from skin care procedures.

Can hyperpigmentation be cured?

Hyperpigmentation can be cured or significantly faded. Over time, the appearance of the discolouration gradually lessens, as the skin heals and the melanin is absorbed into surrounding tissue. This can take from a few months (in the case of a minor trauma to the skin) to several years.

Some instances of hyperpigmentation hardly change at all, or will only fade to a certain point then stall, however some products can help speed up this process.

What causes acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people. It causes irritation, oily skin and spots. There are many different causes and types of acne and it most commonly develops on the face, back and chest. Acne is most commonly linked to hormone changes but other factors such as diet and personal hygiene can play a part.

How do I prevent acne?

It is essential to have a regular skincare routine and to understand your skin type, for example oily, dry or combination. Having a clear understanding will aid in choosing correct products to use on your skin, using tropical treatments, avoiding touching your face, limiting sun exposure and keeping hydrated can also help to prevent acne.

How to treat acne scars?

Suffering from acne can cause scaring, there are many treatments that can help minimize the appearance of acne scars. For example using tropical treatments such as retinol, using a daily SPF and treatments such as the ZO chemical skin peel, laser and skin needling.

How can improve the appearance of my undereyes?

The most common complaint under the eyes is darkness and fine lines. ZO offers a wide range of products to strengthen delicate skin and minimize the appearance of lines, dark circles and puffiness.

What causes premature aging?

UV radiation (sunlight) can speed up the natural aging process and is the primary cause of premature aging. Other factors include smoking, alcohol abuse, poor diet and by not having a regular skincare routine.

How do I prevent premature aging?

Some ways to prevent or reduce aging include:

  • Using sun protection – using a SPF 30 or over every day, wearing a hat or clothing to protect your skin reduces skin damage
  • Moisturising daily – moisturising prevents dryness which can increase the chance of wrinkles
  • Stop smoking – smoking greatly speeds up skin aging
  • Drink less alcohol – alcohol dehydrates the skin, which can cause damage over time
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet – getting the right vitamins including vitamins c & e can contribute to skin health.
  • Add a retinol – retinoids are one of the most studied anti-aging ingredients, they have the ability to increase collagen production and encourages skin regeneration.
